christine78 Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 Wondering if someone could help me. My dad has just bought a Ford Galaxy from an auction for my mum who has problems with her mobility and is not very good with her legs. She only wanted a small car that would be easy for her to get into - so hit the roof when he told her what he had bought! It has not been delivered yet - but it would set her mind at rest if someone could tell me how easy it is to get into and out of this people carrier? Do you have to step up to get into it?Hope someone can help. Thanks Quote
sparky Paul Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 First of all, I'm assuming we are talking about the earlier 1995-2006 Galaxy, which is what I have, rather than the new 2006-on model. The seats in the Galaxy are a bit higher than most cars, but for most people it's a comfortable height to just drop onto and lift your legs in. Generally, I have found that the Galaxy is very good for those with impaired mobility. The doors open very wide, and the really neat thing about the front seats on most models is that they can be rotated so they are facing the door - once on the seat, you can easily rotate it back to the striaght-ahead position as you lift your legs in. Hope this helps. ;) Quote
sparky Paul Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 striaght=straight of course... please excuse my ham-handed typing. ;) Quote
mk2vr6 Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 the entrance to the load area is fairly low! if you remove the rear two seats and stick in a full height dog guard, she should be ok? if you lean her on the edge, lay her back down and then roll her in :D there are a couple of tie down points in the boot if you wish to stop her rolling about? this from the man who works in the mobilty industry ;) Quote

I'm sure your mum will love the Galaxy when you get her. Let us know how she gets on. Quote
MrT Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 When I have had to get my disabled mother into the Galaxy I have found it useful to carry one of the four legged plastic steps/stands about 20cm high with about a 30x20cm top which she uses to step up. In the rear of the car the legs of the front headrests make a good handgrip to pull yourself in. Also the inner armrest on the chair is useful to stop you falling across the vehicle as you manouver yourself in. In the front having the seat low and the steering wheel high makes access easy. Quote
gregers Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 could you not just use a plastic hop up. Quote

Thanksi brought a galaxy for the same reasons as you, mom with two creaky old knees now she finds it alot better getting in than a car which is low down.now shes got more leg room and also higher up were she can park her bum on the seat and turn around to get in . all i can say is now she never been more happy to get in a car. Quote
davewill Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 My mother who is 85 and last year had an op on her knee after a fall, is much happier getting in and out of the Gal, rather than my wifes BMW 1 series Shes only 5ft tall (my mother not the wife) but can still ease herself into the rear seats (will never travel in the front) and when it comes to getting out, just swivels herself and easliy puts both feet onto the ground Your mother should be fine Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 I'm surprised that no-one has considered the opposite. i.e. how easy is it to get out? We're both now of pensionable age and cannot remember how we used to cget out of many of the cars we have had in the past. It's a lot easier to climb up into a slightly higher seat than it is to struggle out of one that is barely a foot above kerb height. My mother is 90 and she has no trouble at all getting in and out of the Gal. I'm sure that your mum will love it once she gets ove the shock of the amount of space she has. My only fear is that your dad might have a few shocks on the maintenance side. Nevertheless, I hope it works out for both of them. Quote

Excellent point, you forget how easy it is to slip in and out of the Galaxy. Quote
seatkid Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Galaxy is a little too high. Easier to get out than get in. Try one out first with your disabled mum, you may not find it suitable. Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 Galaxy is a little too high. You haven't got short fat hairy legs, have you? :D :D Quote
jkspoff Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 Have it lowered to -50mm Gmax springs, lowers the Galaxy for easier access and improves the handling at the same time ! The boot is easier to access too for heavy items. Quote
